I am very pleased to share an important update on road safety along the Beamore Road in Drogheda – an issue I have been pursuing consistently on behalf of local residents. Following a Notice of Question I submitted for the upcoming Local Area Council Meeting, Meath County Council has now confirmed that a series of road safety improvement works will take place at Beamore Cross and Mounthanover Cross in the coming weeks.
These commitments represent a meaningful step forward for everyone who uses the Beamore Road. I know from the many conversations I have had with residents that the condition of these junctions has been a serious concern for some time. Too many accidents have taken place here, and people are rightly anxious about the safety of their daily journeys. That is why I have continued to raise this issue with the Council and why I am glad to see progress now being made.
The Council has confirmed to me that targeted safety measures are due to be implemented shortly at both junctions. These works will improve visibility, address collision risks, and make this route safer for drivers, and cyclists. and pedestrians. While the immediate improvements are welcome, this is also part of a wider process aimed at delivering long-term safety upgrades for the whole area.
Alongside the scheduled works, I can confirm that the Council is continuing to advance the Beamore Cross Safety Scheme under the Department of Transport’s Specific Improvement programme. The scheme has now reached Phase 2 – Option Selection, which is a key milestone in identifying the most effective design solution to address safety issues at Beamore Cross. Getting to this stage reflects the clear need for action and the strong case I have been making on behalf of the community.
Furthermore, the Council has included the Mounthanover Junction in its 2026 Safety Improvement Works Grant Application to the Department of Transport. This is an important development that strengthens our chances of securing further investment for the area. With traffic continuing to increase and the local population growing, it is essential that these junctions receive the attention and funding required to ensure long-term safety.
I have been very clear in my discussions with the Council that urgent action is needed. The Beamore Road, from Colpe right through to Platin, has become increasingly unsafe, and the frequency of accidents is simply unacceptable. People need to feel confident travelling this road, and they deserve to see real improvements delivered without delay.
While I welcome the commitments now in place, I will continue to monitor progress closely. My priority is to ensure that the scheduled works proceed on time, that the Beamore Cross Safety Scheme keeps moving through its required stages, and that Mounthanover Junction remains firmly on the agenda for funding. I will keep raising this issue at every opportunity until the necessary improvements are fully delivered.
Road safety is a core part of my work as a Councillor. Effective infrastructure, well- designed junctions, and proper investment all contribute to the quality of life of our communities. When local people tell me that certain roads feel unsafe, I take that seriously. The Beamore Road is one of those areas where change is urgently needed, and I am committed to seeing that change through.
I want to acknowledge the residents who have contacted me about these issues and who continue to advocate for a safer road network for their community. Your feedback is invaluable, and it strengthens the case for investment every time I raise these matters with the Council and the Department of Transport.
I will keep the pressure on, and I will continue working to deliver the improvements that local people need and deserve. This update marks encouraging progress, but there is more work to do. I remain fully committed to securing a safer Beamore Road for all who use it.
